30 answers on how we price plans, what we need from you, what it costs and how switching works.
The basics
What is KiloHound?
An independent plan checker for Texas electricity. We price the Power to Choose plans we can read and verify against your own usage and tell you when switching pays, after the cancellation fee. We’re not a retail electric provider: we don’t sell electricity, and we never enroll you in or switch a plan; you enroll directly with the provider.
Do you switch my plan for me?
No. We never switch you or enroll you in anything: we tell you which plan is cheapest for your usage and when to switch, and you enroll directly with the provider, on its own site (about five minutes). If you switch providers, Texas rules give you three federal business days after you get the new provider’s terms to cancel the switch.
Why not just use Power to Choose?
Power to Choose ranks by the price at exactly 1,000 kWh, and providers design plans to look cheapest at that one number. We price each plan we can verify on your real usage, per billing cycle, including credits, fees and time-of-use windows.
Do you cover every plan?
Nearly. We read and verify about 98% of Power to Choose plans automatically (927 of 944 plans on Sep 26, 2026). A few plans can’t be read automatically because of how their provider publishes them; we review those by hand, so they may appear a little later than the rest. We also leave out plans we can’t price for your home, such as prepaid plans; the full plan list says what was left out and why.
My area isn’t deregulated. Can I use this?
No. Austin Energy, CPS Energy, El Paso, co-ops and other municipal areas don’t have retail choice, so there are no plans to compare.
Your data
What data do you need?
Your usage (a Smart Meter Texas export or 12 months of kWh from your bills), your utility (from your ZIP), and your current plan’s Electricity Facts Label with its end date. No SSN, no account numbers, no passwords to your electricity account.
Where do I get my Smart Meter Texas data?
Log in at smartmetertexas.com, choose “Energy Data 15 Min Interval” or “Daily Meter Reads”, pick your dates, and use Export. Upload the CSV here. If you don’t have an account, 12 monthly kWh numbers from your bills work too.
No Smart Meter Texas account?
Copy the kWh off your bills instead. At setup, choose “Copy from your bills” and type the “kWh used” from your last 12 bills, oldest first. The plans we compare are priced on those months the same way. The one thing monthly totals can’t price is a time-of-use plan (free nights or weekends), which needs 15-minute data; those plans are left out, and we say so.
Do I need an account for the free check?
No. Enter your ZIP and run the whole check without one. We keep what you enter for 30 days after your last visit so you can come back to it, then delete it, and you can delete it sooner from your result. Make a free account when you want to keep it or get a reminder before your contract ends. Seeing the plan itself takes an account and Your plan + a year of Watch.
Is my data safe?
Sign-in runs on our own server, auth.kilohound.com. You can sign in with an emailed link or a passkey and never set a password; if you do set one, it is stored only as a salted hash. Add or remove passkeys, set a password and see your signed-in devices in Settings → Sign-in & security. Your data is encrypted in transit and in backups, never sold, and you can delete your account from Settings at any time. A few records Texas broker rules require (your data authorizations, the disclosures we gave you, payments and refunds, and complaints) are kept apart for 2 years (16 TAC §25.486(l)). Stripe, our payment processor, keeps its own payment records as the law requires.
The math
How accurate are the savings?
They’re estimates from your past 12 months of usage, compared with your current plan, on today’s facts labels and your utility’s current delivery charges. Weather and life change usage, so we also show each plan’s cost if your usage runs 10% higher or lower.
What about bill-credit plans?
We price the credit cycle by cycle: it only counts in the billing cycles where your usage qualifies. We also flag plans where your usage sits close to a credit threshold, because a mild month can cost you the credit.
Why isn’t the pick always the cheapest plan?
When the cheapest plan comes from a provider with a poor complaint rating on Power to Choose, and a better-rated plan is within 3%, we pick the better-rated one. The cheaper plan stays in your list, flagged, so you can still choose it.
Do you handle free-nights and time-of-use plans?
Yes, if you upload 15-minute data. We price the free window on when you actually use electricity, not on the provider’s assumption.
Can I ask for 100% renewable only?
Yes. Your result shows “Your must-haves” above the answer: choose 100% renewable there (or in Settings), and we only pick from plans Power to Choose lists as 100% renewable. You can also rule out poorly rated providers and choose a contract length. Your own plan is still priced, so you can see what going green costs or saves.
How often do you check?
Every morning. A free account’s numbers stay current: we re-price its homes every morning. Watch is what members get for 12 months: the plan to pick, by name, and a switch alert when a switch saves at least $60 a year after fees, the fee-free window reminder and a monthly check-up. The check-up is on by default, one click to turn off.
Contracts and switching
Should I break my contract to switch?
Only if the savings over your remaining months clearly beat your cancellation fee: by default, twice over. Otherwise we tell you to wait for the last 14 days of your contract, when you can switch without the fee, and remind you before your contract ends.
What happens when my contract ends?
If you don’t pick a new plan, you’re likely moved onto a month-to-month holdover rate. We email you 45 days before your end date, and once more if the contract ends and you’re still on it; those reminders are free. With Your plan + a year of Watch, we also email when the fee-free window opens. These reminders are plan alerts: turn them off in Settings, or with the Unsubscribe link at the bottom of any of them, no sign-in needed.
I’m moving. Can you help?
Yes, and it’s free, with or without a membership. Plan the move on your home: the new ZIP, the date and how much power you expect to use there. We price plans at the new address before you go (members see which plan). When you’ve moved, confirm it: the home takes the new address, and we price on the usage you expect until your new meter data is in. A home can confirm one move every 6 months.
How do I switch?
Open the recommended plan from your dashboard (its name and switch link come with Your plan + a year of Watch) and enroll on the provider’s own site. It takes about five minutes.
Pricing and billing
Can I buy a membership yet?
Not yet. We’ve applied to register as an electricity broker with the Public Utility Commission of Texas, and we take no payment before the Commission grants it. Until then nothing is charged, and the savings check and contract-end reminders are free.
How do you make money?
From members, and nothing else. The savings check and contract-end reminders are free; Your plan + a year of Watch is $39 a year plus tax, the same for everyone. Electricity providers pay us nothing, so there’s no plan we’d rather you picked.
What’s free?
The savings check and contract-end reminders are free. When your plan is already the best, or close, the check says so, free. The check shows how much you’d save, with your costs and the best plan’s cost on your usage, estimated from your past 12 months of usage, and the switch math on your own cancellation fee. The plan itself (its name, type and provider) and the link to switch come with Your plan + a year of Watch. Free for good, not a trial.
Why charge to see the plan?
Because members are how we get paid. Electricity providers pay us nothing, so we earn no commission when you switch: Your plan + a year of Watch, at $39 a year plus tax, is the whole business. The free check shows you the money first: how much you’d save, with your costs and the best plan’s cost on your usage, before you pay anything. If no switch saves at least $60 a year after fees, the check says “Sit tight”: keep your plan. That verdict is free; the names of the plans we compared come with a membership.
What does Your plan + a year of Watch include?
The recommended plan (its name, type and provider) and the link to switch on the provider’s own site, every plan we compared ranked for your house with the math, then 12 months of Watch: the plan to pick, kept current as we re-price every morning, and a switch alert when a switch saves at least $60 a year after fees, the fee-free window reminder and a monthly check-up (one click to turn off). Contract-end reminders come too; those are free for everyone.
What if I don’t switch?
Ask for a refund within 30 days of paying and you get your money back in full, no questions asked. Or keep Watch: as we re-price every morning it keeps naming the plan to pick, and sends a switch alert when a switch saves at least $60 a year after fees, the fee-free window reminder and a monthly check-up, along with your contract-end reminders.
Does it renew?
Yes, yearly, at the regular price: $39 plus tax. A promotion code lowers your first payment only; every renewal is at the regular price. Turn renewal off in Settings and it won’t renew.
Can I add more than one home?
Yes, with a membership. A membership covers one home; each more is $15/year plus tax on the same membership. Homes you already have when you buy a membership are part of that purchase, charged in its price; a home you add during a membership is free until the membership’s next renewal. Extra homes are free during the beta. The homes must be homes you live in, own, rent, or look after for family. Each home has its own usage, plan, must-haves and alerts, and an account holds up to 10. Managing lots of properties? Email us and we’ll set up something that fits.
How do referrals work?
Referral rewards are coming soon: we plan to give you and each friend who signs up and stays three months of Watch free. The details, with their own terms, will be on the referral page before it starts.
Can I cancel?
Any time, from Settings: turn off renewal and no renewal is charged. Turning renewal off stops future renewals; a payment already due on an invoice issued before then is still owed. Deleting your account removes your data. A few records Texas broker rules require (your data authorizations, the disclosures we gave you, payments and refunds, and complaints) are kept apart for 2 years (16 TAC §25.486(l)). Stripe, our payment processor, keeps its own payment records as the law requires.
